2018 continues to be a year of growth for the video games industry in the US, with hardware spending showing a 19% year-over-year growth according to the NPD Group. Mat Piscatella, US Video Games Industry Analyst at the market research company shared some interesting facts about the US video games market in July, which saw the Nintendo Switch once again beat the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One as the top-selling hardware platform.

The 19% YoY growth in hardware spending in July was “driven by Xbox One, Switch and Plug N Play devices such as the NES Classic,” Piscatella said, adding that Xbox One hardware sales grew nearly 50% in value last month. This is certainly a good sign ahead of the holiday season.

US NPD HW – Xbox One hardware sales continue to trend higher. Dollar sales grew nearly 50 percent in July and have now increased by more than 60 percent year to date.

Xbox One accessories are also doing well in the US, as the standard Xbox One white controller was the best-selling gaming accessory in July. Still, the PS4 black controller remains the most popular gaming accessory to date according to the NPD Group.

US NPD ACC & GC – The Xbox One S White Controller was July’s top revenue generating Accessory, while the PS4 DualShock 4 Black Controller has driven the highest dollar sales of any Accessory year to date.

As you may know, Microsoft stopped sharing details about Xbox One sales years ago to focus on Xbox Live engagement, and this was probably for good reason. Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console in this generation, and it shouldn’t be long before the Nintendo Switch eventually beats the Xbox One and claims the #2 spot. Still, the Xbox One is doing well for Microsoft, which said that itsgaming revenue increased 39% during the past quarter.

Now that pretty much all Xbox One exclusive games are available on PC, it’s quite amazing to see that Microsoft still manages to remain competitive in the gaming market. Besides having the most powerful console with the Xbox One X, this may well be the results the company’s forward-thinking approach with features like Xbox One Backward Compatibility, Xbox Play Anywhere, and a new push for crossplay multiplayer support in cross-platform multiplayer games.
