Microsoft todayannouncedEdge in Windows 10 build 17120 picked up bug fixes to help Variable Fonts and SVG animations shine. This feature allows for custom font styles to adapt and generate from a single font programmatically without the need for multiple files. This comes several months after Microsoft initiallyadded Variable Fonts to build 17074.
You can see an example of Variable Fonts in this GIF below, which according to Microsoft is “animated along an astounding 15 axes using variable fonts.”
The Redmond giantalso put together an interactive guidewhich explains how the freshly added CSS font-variation-settings and font-optical-sizing can make life easier for web developers and designers. The guide is best viewed in Microsoft Edge and also demonstrates how variable fonts can be more expressive and powerful.
Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, and Google originally pioneered the OpenType Variable Fonta few years ago. Please feel free to check out the guide once you’re up and running with build 17120, and do let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Update:We’ve updated the headline and this article to clarify that support for Variable Fonts were previously added in build 17074. Build 17120 only picks up a few bug fixes to make the Variable Fonts demo shine. Thanks, Kyle Pflug from the Edge Team for the correction!
