Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint was never the most beloved game, even when it launched toward the end of 2019, but the game has enjoyed two years of fairly consistent support and a total of 11 post-launch content updates. Everything has to end, however, and it appears the time has come for Ubisoft’s open-world, third-person military shooter.

On Tuesday, Ubisoft announced that the final update forTom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpointwas Operation Motherland, originally released in Nov. 2021 (and the subsequent patches and event content released since then). Ghost Recon Breakpoint is officially end-of-life, meaning the game will no longer receive any new content in the future. Ubisoft confirmed that the servers for both Ghost Recon games will continue to be maintained moving forward, so players can still enjoy the game as it is right now.

Ubisoft also hinted at the future of the Ghost Recon franchise, ending its message with, “The feedback you’ve given for Ghost Recon Breakpoint has been instrumental and will help shape the future of the franchise.” It’s not clear when or in what form a new Ghost Recon game is coming, but it’s unlikely the franchise as a whole is dying with the end of Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

The announcement of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint going end-of-life comes mere months after the debut ofUbisoft’s controversial “Quartz” NFT platform, which used Ghost Recon Breakpoint as a launching ground for Ubisoft’s first in-game NFTs. The community backlash from the announcement was immense, and our own Jez Corden discussed at length howUbisoft’s move into NFTs is terrible for gamers.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint was never considered one of thebest Xbox games, but the title still cultivated a dedicated and sizeable player base, especially as it improved after launch. Many fans are responding to the announcement with hope for the future of the franchise and what the next Ghost Recon game may bring.
