What you need to know

Sony has new wireless earbuds on the market called LinkBuds. They have a tiny hoop in each bud that enables you to hear ambient noises from the outside world even when you’re listening to music or on a call. And to boost that ambient locational awareness even further, the buds pack Microsoft Soundscape.

Microsoft Soundscape is a technology that utilizes 3D audio cues to give you a better idea of where you are entirely based on the sounds you’re hearing. Here’s Microsoft’s technical definition of what its Soundscape tech is and what it does:

Soundscape provides information about your surroundings with synthesized binaural audio, creating the effect of 3D sound. It can run in the background in conjunction with navigation or other applications to provide you with additional context about the environment. Your phone, in hand or in pocket, tracks movement using location and activity sensors, and lets you move toward a self-set audio beacon.

LinkBudscombine their own ambient-noise-friendly design with the power of Soundscape for maximum aural awareness. You can get the new Sony device in grey or white from Amazon and Best Buy, and you can learn more about Soundscapedirectly from Microsoft.

Ambient earbuds

Sony LinkBuds provide a different experience for your ears than most earbuds thanks to their design. And that experience is heightened by Microsoft Soundscape, which helps synthesize a true 3D audio environment.
