Report: Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13’s new IP canceled, costs $53 million

Developer Hangar 13’s new IP, codenamed Volt, has been canceled, per a report fromBloomberg. Hangar 13 is a studio under Take-Two Interactive that previously worked on Mafia 3 and Mafia: Definitive Edition. When Take-Two Interactive shared itsfinancial results for Q2 2022, the company noted that an unannounced game was canceled, incurring a $53 million cost.

This new IP was previouslyreportedas being “Cthulhu meets Saints Row.” Bloomberg notes that it isn’t currently clear if there will be layoffs at the studio as a result of this cancellation. The game was reportedly in development since 2017, with issues arising due to project reboots and the pandemic. The next steps for the studio are reportedly being discussed on Thursday.

Publisher Take-Two Interactive maintains a large slate of upcoming games, including theGTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, which is set to launch on Nov. 11, 2021. A new enhanced port of GTA 5 for current-generation consoles and PC is set to be available in March 2022. Meanwhile, Firaxis-developed superhero strategy game Marvel’s Midnight Suns was delayed, and is now launching sometime in the second half of 2022.
