Microsoft held a Windows Mixed Reality event in San Fransisco yesterday, where HoloLens inventor Alex Kipman unveiled the company’s vision for virtual reality. While there was no live stream yesterday, Microsoft has since published a video of the event and it’s a must watch to understand what Microsoft wants to achieve with its new platform.

In the 35 minutes video, Kipman explains how Windows Mixed Reality will work on thefirst headsets from HP, Acer, Lenovo, Dell and Samsung to be released later this Fall. Kipman’s demo explains how to interact with UWP apps and holograms, and he also explains other use cases such as gaming and thesocial VR platform AltspaceVR that Microsoft recently acquired.

Don’t be mistaken by the “Windows Mixed Reality” branding though, the first head-mounted displays to be released later this month will all be “classic” VR headsets with opaque lenses. However, Kipmanexplainedlast year that “over time all devices will start looking more and more like HoloLens,” which remains the only untethered headset with a translucent lens on the market today.

Do you expect the first Windows Mixed Reality headsets to be a hit with consumers, or do you think virtual reality and mixed reality will remain a niche market for quite some time? Let us know below.

Radu Tyrsina has been a Windows fan ever since he got his first PC, a Pentium III (a monster at that time).

For most of the kids of his age, the Internet was an amazing way to play and communicate with others, but he was deeply impressed by the flow of information and how easily you can find anything on the web.

Prior to founding Windows Report, this particular curiosity about digital content enabled him to grow a number of sites that helped hundreds of millions reach faster the answer they’re looking for.
