Microsoft just announced that it has signed an agreement to acquireDeis– a “Kubernetes container-orchestration specialist”. According to the company’s Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise, Scott Guthrie, this acquisition is part of Microsoft’s plan to ensureAzureis the best place for containerized workload.

“At Microsoft, we’ve seen explosive growth in both interest and deployment of containerized workloads on Azure, and we’re committed to ensuring Azure is the best place to run them. To support this vision, we’re pleased to announce that Microsoft has signed an agreement to acquire Deis – a company that has been at the center of the container transformation,”saidGuthrie.

Gabe Monroy, Chief Technology officer of Deis alsoexpresseddelight about the company’s new business direction and partnership with Microsoft. According to Monroy, the Deis team will continue to contribute toWorkflow,Helm, andSteward, as well as keep deep connections with the Kubernetes community.

“From our new home atMicrosoftyou should expect nothing less. We will continue our contributions to Workflow, Helm, and Steward and look forward to maintaining our deep engagement with the Kubernetes community. The future of open source infrastructure at Microsoft is very bright.”

Kubernetes is an open-source container cluster management tool, that makes it easier to developers to work in this environment, by providing automated deployment, scaling and operations of application containers. Earlier this year, Microsoft integrated Kubernetes into its own Azure Container Service, so acquiring a company like Deis is a logical step.

The new partnership should also make it easier for users to work with Microsoft’s existing container offering, including Linux and Windows Server Containers, Hyper-V Containers and Azure Container Service.
