One of Microsoft’s most notable efforts in the past few years has been white space technology – an initiative that involves taking old, unused parts of the broadcast spectrum in order to help rural communities access the internet, where they might otherwise have trouble. With internet access considered a basic human right by the United Nations, Microsoft’s efforts have been a push towards creating a more connected world. They’ve been testing the technology in places like the Philippines for a while, and just registered for a couple of trademarks with the “Airband” name.
Two trademarks werespotted by MSPU:One trademarkthat covers the “development of computer hardware and software” regarding white spaces, andanother trademarkthat deals with “Providing business information and consulting in the field of white space telecommunications and internet connectivity.” These trademarks were both certified on January 16th, and mark the next push in Microsoft’s attempts to make Airband a big brand.

Microsoft tweeted about their Airband Initiative Grant Fund just a couple of weeks before the trademarks went through, indicating that the company is making a significant branding push for the Airband name. Keep an eye out in the near future for Microsoft to keep pushing forward with white space technology – likely expanding it out into more regions.

For most of the kids of his age, the Internet was an amazing way to play and communicate with others, but he was deeply impressed by the flow of information and how easily you can find anything on the web.
Prior to founding Windows Report, this particular curiosity about digital content enabled him to grow a number of sites that helped hundreds of millions reach faster the answer they’re looking for.
