Microsoft has purchased 65 acres of land in the heart of Silicon Vally, andaccording to Mercury News, is eyeing a cloud and internet expansion. The company reportedly paid $73.2 million for the space running along State Route 237 between Alviso and Milpitas, soon joining other tech giants like SanDisk, and Polycom in the area.

Judging from proposals submitted to the local government, Microsoft could be opening up a 437,000 square feet facility. Based on local zoning laws, this means that about 2,200 people could be working in the new building. This is great news for the citizens in the area looking for work, since according to the original report, amenities in the area have also recently been constructed, including new stores and hotels.

Microsoft has not yet announced any official plans, but Christian Belady, general manager of Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations issued the following statement:

“We continuously explore opportunities to meet the needs of a future based on cloud computing and internet services, so we’re thrilled to find a great one in the heart of Silicon Valley.”

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, meanwhile, welcomed Microsoft to the area:

“We welcome Microsoft’s substantial investment in San Jose, as it seeks to meet the world’s burgeoning demand for cloud capacity… I especially appreciate Microsoft’s sensitivity to the surrounding environment and its continued commitment to sustainable construction and operations.”

Although Microsoft is based out of Washington, the company still has a campus in Silicon Calley, nearby to Google’s headquarters. It’s great to see Microsoft expanding, as its Azure cloud services are becoming ever so popular.
