Microsoft announces new 74-megawatt solar project in North Carolina

Microsoft is expanding its investments in renewable energy, and has partnered with Invenergy to set up a 74-megawatt solar-powered project in North Carolina. While the panels will be owned by Invenergy, Microsoft has made an undisclosed purchase agreement with the company to make itself the only consumer of the energy for the next 15 years. Microsoft’s general manager for Energy and Sustainability, Brian Janous,explainedthat:

“When we invest in renewable energy, we are investing in the future — enabling sustainable growth of our business, of the clean energy sector and the local communities that benefit economically from Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability. Our work with companies like Invenergy is an integral step toward our goal of enabling a clean energy future for everyone. We are pleased our partnership will bring new solar resources to the PJM region.”

Microsoft cites not just its commitment to preserving the natural environment, but also the fact that the construction of the project to create as many as 500 jobs. More than $20 million will be invested into the local economy though tax and lease payments, and from the employee wages.

It’s expected to begin operation later this year, and will bring the Microsoft’s total renewable energy portfolio to a whopping 1.3 gigawatts. It’s a good investment for the company, one that will please environmental advocates and create jobs, as well as benefit itself by providing it sustainable energy.
