Microsoft announced this morning theacquisition of Flipgrid, a video-based social learning platform already used by more than 20 million students and educators worldwide, for an undisclosed amount. This is the company’s latest move to remain one of the top players in the education market, where it has been facing increased competition from Google and Apple in recent years

Flipgridwas created back in 2015 as video discussion platform for students, family and educators, and it currently has iOS and Android mobile apps, integrations with OneNote, Microsoft Teams and many other platforms. Now that Flipgrid is now part of Microsoft, the service has become free for all educators and students and Redmond will providea prorated refundto every educator who upgraded in the past year.

“Equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in this future will require an engaged community made up of dedicated administrators, great teachers, motivated students and involved parents,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “Technology is merely a tool to enable their creativity and ingenuity. Together with Flipgrid, we aim to democratise these tools to empower every indicators and student to create the world of tomorrow,” he added.
