Despite much of the internet browsing worldpreferring to make use of Google’s Chrome web browser, the folks over at Mozilla continue to toil away at providing an alternative solution with their Firefox software.
A couple of days ago, Mozilla rolled out Firefox v.69 and with the new release, the company is empowering Android, Windows, and Mac users with a new blocking feature that targets third-party tracking cookies and Cryptomining by default.According to a Mozilla press release:
For today’s release, Enhanced Tracking Protection will automatically be turned on by default for all users worldwide as part of the ‘Standard’ setting in the Firefox browser and will block known “third-party tracking cookies” according to theDisconnect list. Wefirst enabled this default feature for new usersin June 2019. As part of thisjourney, we rigorouslytested,refined, and ultimately landedon a new approach to anti-trackingthat is core to delivering on our promise of privacy and security as central aspects of your Firefox experience.
The new additions are denoted by a new bright green lock icon that appears in the address bar of the browser that highlights the safety and security of the site per Firefox’s stringent tracking policies.
For specific allowances, Android users can dig a bit deeper into the new features preferences by hitting the green lock icon in the address bar and opt to “Turn off Blocking for This Site.”
A lesser highlighted feature of Firefox 69 is the protection from Fingerprint scripts that help protect users from sites that capture snapshots of a computer’s configuration upon visit. To enable this feature, users need to turn on “Strict Mode” from their browser settings, for now. Mozilla mentions in their press release, that they are planning to bring Fingerprint script protection as default feature sometime in the future.
