Farewell Windows Vista: Microsoft ends support for its unpopular OS today

Microsoft just ended support forWindows Vista.Starting from today, the infamous operating system will no longer receive security patches, non-security updates, or any other kind of support.

“Microsoft has provided support for Windows Vista for the past 10 years, but the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources towards more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences,”the company said.

Windows Vista will be remembered as the least popular operating system Microsoft has ever released. Announced as a futuristic operating system back in 2007, Windows Vista quickly stumbled and fell. A few characteristics of Windows Vista that made this OS so unpopular among users and critics were its demand for a considerably more powerful PCs along with the quick release of its vastly more popular successor, Windows 7. Today, Windows Vista is only used by 0.72% of users worldwide according toNetMarketShare. So, we can safely say nobody will really miss this operating system.

Microsoft ended commercial support for Windows Vista back in 2012. However, extended support for the second service pack end today. The only feature that will continue to receive security updates in Windows Vista is Microsoft Security Essentials — and even that is only “for a limited time”.
