Now that Google is planning to launch its Stadia game streaming service in November, we were all waiting to see Microsoft share more details about its own Project xCloud service. Well, the Redmond giant finally did so during its E3 2019 press briefing, and there was some unexpected surprises..

Essentially, Microsoft announced today that it will try a hybrid approach with Project xCloud. On one hand, the software giant is building a cloud service by putting current Xbox One consoles in server blades, and the game streaming service will be compatible with all existing and future Xbox One games when it officially launches.

On the other hand, Microsoft announced today that there will be another way to enjoy xCloud by streaming games from your own Xbox One console to the devices of your choice. It was already possible to stream Xbox One games to a Windows 10 PC through the Xbox app, but what Microsoft announced today is the ability to turn your Xbox One into your own personal free xCloud server, letting you play the games you already own on any device. “Where you play is entirely your choice, you decide,” said Xbox head Phil Spencer.

Microsoft announced that the first public hands-on with Project xCloud will happen at E3 2019, and a public preview for the console streaming feature as well as Microsoft’s hybrid gaming cloud will launch in October of this year.
