The-long awaited adventure is returning, and no, this isn’t a very late April Fool’s joke. The next Monkey Island adventure is officially in development.

Devolver Digital announced Return to Monkey Island on Monday, a game being developed by Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games,Disney’s games publishing armthat partners with developers on various games. Notably, series director Ron Gilbert is returning to direct Return to Monkey Island. You can check out the announcement trailer for Return to Monkey Island below:

It’s also worth paying to how this game is a follow-up to the 1991 adventure Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, and very explicitly does not follow the events of the other games that followed, specifically, The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island, and Tales of Monkey Island. These latter three games were led by a different creative team and Gilbert was not involved.

The first game in the series, The Secret of Monkey Island, was first developed by the now-defunct Lucasfilm Games development arm. Released in 1990, it was well-received, becoming influential for point-and-click adventure game design. One of the other leads, Tim Schafer, would go on to found Double Fine Productions, a studio that was acquired by Microsoft in 2019.

Return to Monkey Island is currently slated to arrive at some point later in 2022, though there’s no exact release date right now. No exact platforms have been announced yet either, but it seems more than reasonable to assume it’s coming to PC at minimum.
